Starbucks Testing Mobile Payment System

Coffee giant Starbucks has announced that it is expanding its Starbucks Card Mobile payment system in a big way, deploying the innovative new service in 300 stores in New York City today.

Available for BlackBerry, iPhone and iPod Touch devices, the Card Mobile system will allow patrons to pay for their lattes using nothing more than their mobile phone. Expected to help get customers in and out of lineups more quickly, the mobile app also allows users to recharge their account and review Starbucks rewards earned by purchasing.

With the expansion of mobile payment to New York City, we expect to see more and more customers trading their plastic Starbucks Cards for the digital version on their mobile phone. In addition to the payment capability, customers can also keep track of their My Starbucks Rewards status and reload their card while they are on the way to Starbucks or in line.

Starbucks Trialing iPhone Apps

StarbucksAmerican coffee giant Starbucks is reportedly planning to launch two iPhone applications to the Apple App Store. Following the lead of many businesses that have utilized the iPhone in order to provide customers with new services, the Seattle, Washington company will release these apps as a trial to determine the potential for future growth in iPhone marketing.

The first app, titled myStarbucks, simply provides detailed information about the coffee chain including menus, locations, store hours and amenities and nutritional information about their products.

The second application offers a little more in the way of technical savvy. The customized program assigns a unique bar code that can be displayed on the iPhone screen, allowing Starbucks addicts to top up their virtual account and purchase coffee using the iPhone and a pre-paid account only.

The trial is planned to run first in San Francisco, a city toted for both its innumerable Starbucks locations and avid iPhone users.
