Sony Ericsson Profits for Third Consecutive Quarter

Sony Ericsson has released its Q3 2010 earnings report today, showing the company’s third consecutive profitable quarter following the big hit taken during the early stages of the so-called global recession.

Sony Ericsson achieved 1.6 billion EUR in sales during the quarter, down from 1.75 billion EUR in Q2 2010. Those sales were the result of 10.4 million units shipped during the quarter, that number coming in below the 11 million shipped last quarter and the 14.1 million shipped in Q3 2009.

Our strategy to focus on the smartphone segment is succeeding and smartphones now comprise more than 50% of our total sales. During the quarter, we launched our Android-based Xperia models in new markets, such as China and the U.S., and it is our ambition to become the global number one handset provider on the Android platform.

HTC Reports Revenue Growth

HTC has released its financial report covering Q2 2010, posting impressive growth over last year.

With 5.4 million handsets shipped, the company exceeded Q1 results by 2.1 million units, posting total revenues of $1.8 billion USD, a healthy 66.68 percent increase over last year’s dismal results in the midst of the global recession.

Alongside the financial report came a comment from HTC on the manufacturing limitations it faced earlier this year, citing supplier shortages and pledging to increase production at its Shanghai, China facility during Q3 2010.

Sony Ericsson Profits Again in Q2

Sony Ericsson has posted its second straight report of quarterly profits, indicating that the company is beginning to see an end to its own personal recession.

With Q2 2010 results indicating sales of 1.75 billion EUR, Sony Ericsson has managed a 25 percent increase in sales over last quarter; this is a four percent increase year-over-year. Q2 sales were represented by 11 million units shipped, netting 12 million EUR in profit for a company that saw new losses of more than 200 million EUR in the same quarter last year.

Our second quarter results show that the company continued the momentum seen in the first quarter as a result of our focus on the value market and the success of new smartphones; Xperia X10 and Vivaz, launched during the first quarter. These models, along with the Xperia X10 mini and Xperia X10 mini pro which started shipping at the end of the second quarter, have been well received by operators and we are now well positioned for long term growth.

Sony Ericsson Records Profit in Q1 2010

Sony Ericsson has announced its Q1 2010 earnings and, despite forecasts of continued trouble for the high-end mobile phone maker, the company was able to report profits.

The number of handsets shipped by Sony Ericsson feel from 14.6 million in 4 2009 to 10.5 million in this latest quarter but that result was expected as the company moved to focus more on high-end phones, leaving fast-selling feature phones behind.

Increases in both gross and operating margins show that we are on the right track to build the correct cost structure for our business organization and strategy. We will continue to work through the transformation program to ensure that we are competitive.

Sony Ericsson president Bert Nordberg

With a total positive net income of 21 million EUR in this latest quarter, Sony Ericsson executives are happy to be leaving behind the 167 million EUR loss that they saw in Q1 2009; this profit report represents the first positive quarterly outcome for Sony Ericsson since 2008.

Sony Ericsson Posts 2009 Net Loss

Sony Ericsson has released its 2009 profit statement, indicating a net loss for the year despite late efforts like the company’s popular Satio handset.

That loss amounted to $40 million in Q4 2009 though it was a big improvement over the reported Q3 2009 loss of $198 million. Most indicators point to Sony Ericsson’s restructuring efforts as a success with 14.6 million handsets shipped in Q4 and a total of 51.1 million shipped in 2009; both numbers pale in comparison to the total 96.6 million units shipped in 2008 but was expected by all industry analysts given last year’s economic upheaval in most parts of the world.

With its recent releases and latest announcements, Sony Ericsson expects to see continued growth, though small, throughout 2010.

Overall sales of mobile phones are disappointing and it is pointing toward a weaker global market in the fourth quarter than was expected by the market. On the positive side we see that the new phones are well received by the customers and (Sony Ericsson) is really selling more high-end phones, raising the average sales price quite a bit – a lot more than I had expected.
