Android to Offer Baidu Search in China

Popular Chinese search engine Baidu has announced that their brand will begin to be set as the default flavor of search in all Google Android devices sold in China, effective as soon as Chinese provider’s make the necessary changes to their Android releases.

Given Baidu’s ongoing effort to push Google Search from the Chinese market once and for all, this move can only strengthen their position. Already holding about a 75 percent share of the search market compared to Google’s 19.6 percent, Baidu’s dominance of the fastest growing mobile platform in China means that the homegrown search engine will almost certainly see a big boost in market share, and soon.

Android Pushes Towards China, India

Google’s Andy Rubin has said in an interview that his company is working towards pushing their Android mobile operating system into emerging markets China and India.

The story from Bloomberg News also indicates that Google will soon launch developer tools in those countries, enabling developers to more easily sell subscription services and other products from within Android applications; the move is another that pits Google Android directly against the Apple iPhone.

Despite the media’s hype of a Android/iPhone showdown, Google’s real target here is reportedly Nokia’s Symbian smartphone platform. By working together with Asian companies like Huawei and LG, Google is also likely hoping to help resolve their current Chinese predicament sooner rather than later.

Google Delays Chinese Android Launches

Google has announced today that it will be postponing the release of Android-powered handsets from Motorola and Samsung in China. While details on why exactly this decision was made have yet to be made clear, it is likely safe to assume that there is a strong connection with the company’s recent decision to cease censoring search results in the authoritarian country.

Both handsets were to be released with provider China Unicom on January 20th. A spokesperson for Google has spoken to Dow Jones Newswire, indicating that the company sees it as “irrensponsible” to sell such devices in China when the majority of intended use is tied so closely to Google products, such as search, now in question in the country.

Motorola and Samsung have yet to comment on the situation but it must be safe to assume that they aren’t so willing to give us the huge market China claims based on Google’s say-so.
