Apple Fights Jailbreaking, Celebrates App Store

According to a recently aired report by NBC in the United States, Apple has requested that the U.S. Copyright Office help them to more effectively fight copyright infringement in the form of jailbreaking techniques used on their mobile devices. Jailbreaking, referring to various methods used to allow the installation of unapproved apps on a device, is a method used by some to bypass restrictions put in place by Apple; despite NBC’s confusion, this does not include unlocking a device for use on other networks, which is perfectly legal.

In related news, Apple’s popular App Store, the online marketplace serving apps, both free and paid, to the company’s mobile devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, is nearing the 10 billion downloads milestone. As it did when the App Store reached the 1 billion mark in April 2009, Apple will reward the 10 billionth downloader with a $10,000 App Store gift card. The official number of downloads now sits at about 9.8 billion.

Apple Disables Jailbreak Detection

Web sites around the net reported over the weekend that Apple has, without fanfare, quietly disabled the jailbreak detection API in the latest release of iOS 4.2.

A bane to savvy iPhone users, this API has previously been used by developers to allow an app to detect whether or not a device had had its OS modified, or jailbroken, to allow for the installation of non-Apple Store apps that can take advantage of root-level processes.

Whether Apple will reintroduce this API for developers remains to be seen.

RIM CEO Hits Back at Steve Jobs

The ongoing feud between BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) and Apple, or more specificly Jim Balsillie and Steve Jobs, respective CEOs of those companys, has heated up again.

Following comments made on Monday by Jobs suggesting that 7″ tablets, such as those planned by BlackBerry, would not play a major role in the market, Jim Balsillie struck back at Jobs concerning everything from Adobe Flash to revenue reporting, suggesting that Apple had constructed a distortion field around its customers:

For those of us who live outside of Apple’s distortion field, we know that 7″ tablets will actually be a big portion of the market and we know that Adobe Flash support actually matters to customers who want a real web experience. We also know that while Apple’s attempt to control the ecosystem and maintain a closed platform may be good for Apple, developers want more options and customers want to fully access the overwhelming majority of web sites that use Flash. We think many customers are getting tired of being told what to think by Apple. And by the way, RIM has achieved record shipments for five consecutive quarters and recently shared guidance of 13.8 – 14.4 million BlackBerry smartphones for the current quarter. Apple’s preference to compare its September-ending quarter with RIM’s August-ending quarter doesn’t tell the whole story because it doesn’t take into account that industry demand in September is typically stronger than summer months, nor does it explain why Apple only shipped 8.4 million devices in its prior quarter and whether Apple’s Q4 results were padded by unfulfilled Q3 customer demand and channel orders. As usual, whether the subject is antennas, Flash or shipments, there is more to the story and sooner or later, even people inside the distortion field will begin to resent being told half a story.

Apple Supply Manager Took Kickbacks: report

Mercury News service is reporting that Apple global supply managers Paul Shin Devine and Andrew Ang have been arrested for accepting more than $1 million in kickbacks from sellers of the iPhone and iPod products. The arrests came following reports that some Asian accessory makers were encouraged to offer so-called kickbacks to the pair in return for preferential treatment when supplying products to third-party sellers.

Apple has released a generic statement outlining the importance of ethics in their workplace; further news is expected once the two are arraigned.

Apple is committed to the highest ethical standards in the way we do business. We have zero tolerance for dishonest behavior inside or outside the company.

Apple Releases Excellent Q3 2010 Report

Apple has unveiled its business numbers for the third quarter of the fiscal year 2010, posting record revenue and profit.

With $15.7 billion in revenue accounting for $3.25 billion in profit, Apple has registered a 77 percent increase in profits since Q2 with a $6 billion growth in revenue. Those numbers stem from the solid sales of both iPad and iPhone devices; Apple sold 8.4 million smartphones in the third quarter, a 61 percent increase over Q3 2009. In part due to iPhone sales, the iPod saw a drop in sales of 8 percent; Mac computers round out Apple’s lineup with a 33 percent increase over the same quarter last year.
