With original estimates reaching about 1.5 million concerning first week sales of the Apple iPhone 4, today’s numbers suggest just a few more with total sales adding up to 1.7 million units sold through Saturday.

The official announcement came from Apple this morning and you can be sure that Steve Jobs and friends are feeling good about it. Topping not only first week sales for all other handsets but also for its own iPhone 3G.

This is the most successful product launch in Apple’s history. Even so, we apologize to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply.
