Microsoft to Soon Support NFC

Bloomberg is reporting that Microsoft plans to update its Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system with near-field communications (NFC) support later in the year.

Already supported by the Google Android platform, NFC allows for short-range secure transactions to take place, most often being utilizing in payment systems on-board smartphones, allowing users to make purchases on the go with a point and click. Nokia also offers NFC support on several of its latest devices.

Details are non-existent but the report does specify that Microsoft hopes to release this capability by the end of 2011.

Samsung Devices Get Android, Windows Phone 7 Updates

Updates from Google and Microsoft for two of Samsung’s most popular devices, the Google Nexus S and the Samsung Omnia, are currently rolling out though not everything is going as planned for everyone involved.

A tweet posted by Google’s Nexus Twitter account indicates that Google Android “Gingerbread” version 2.3.3 would begin rolling out with a window of “a few weeks” to get all Nexus S and Nexus One handsets updated. The update includes mainly bug fixes with no new major features being added.

Microsoft began rolling out an update of their own for the Samsung Omnia, one of the first Windows Phone 7 smartphones to hit the market last year, but problems reported by users following the update are giving others pause. The upgrade is a small one intended as a bridge to a bigger update expected next month that will include copy/paste functionality among other goodies, but Microsoft is backtracking at this point after reports of various problems. Microsoft says that they are aware of the issue and will have a fixed update prepared as soon as possible; Omnia owners may want to hit the “ignore” button on that update until then.

Windows Phone 7 “Mango” Coming 2011

Rumors passed onto Mary Jo Foley of ZDNET indicate that Microsoft has a major update to Windows Phone 7 in the works, codenamed “Mango.”

Microsoft’s tentative release schedule would see them release a more minor update early next year with bug fixes, security updates and the promised addition of copy/paste support with the more major overhaul represented by Mango coming in summer 2011.

Possible features discussed as a part of Mango include a Silverlight browser plugin, support for HTML5 and the addition of Far Eastern languages though, of course, no official details are coming from Microsoft.

Adobe Flash Player 10.1 Coming to Windows Phone

Adobe unleashed a slew of updates concerning a number of its products yesterday, including new release promises concerning the mobile version of Adobe Flash Player 10.1.

Yesterday’s press release from Adobe indicated that Flash Player 10.1 would be released for “future versions of Windows Phone,” likely indicating Windows Phone 7 specifically, along with news of planned releases for platforms such as LiMo, Meego and Symbian OS.

While no release schedule was offered, it stands to reason that Adobe will work to have the Windows Phone release available as soon as possible.
