Skype Offers Free 3G Calls on iPhone

Skype has announced that its new version of the iPhone Skype client will allow users of the popular Apple smartphone to make Skype-to-Skype calls over a 3G connection – for free. With free calling previously only available when connected to WiFi, Skype will allow for free 3G calling throughout 2010 with the end of the offer coinciding with pricing plans to be released for 2011.

In addition to the freebie offer, Skype’s latest iPhone quality also boasts improved voice quality described as “CD-like” in the official press release. Other new features include an improved call audio quality indicator, quicker start times and easier access to the dial pad directly from the home screen.

The latest Skype client for iPhone can be downloaded from Apple’s marketplace from your iPhone now.

Nokia & Yahoo! Join Forces

With speculation running rampant last week following the announcement of today’s press conference, Yahoo! and Nokia have officially announced their plans for extensive collaborative efforts in order to push both brands to the next level.

The deal will see Nokia become the exclusive provider of maps and navigation services for Yahoo! by integrating Ovi Maps into existing Yahoo! services; in turn, Yahoo! will power Nokia’s Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services. With cross-branding and the ability to use either an Ovi or Yahoo! account to log into services from both companies, the phone manufacturer and web services giant hope to expand their brands to include new audiences.

We’re excited to expand the reach of our best-in-class Mail and Messenger services, bringing personalized experiences to more people across the mobile web, particularly in emerging markets where we are seeding the next generation of Yahoo users. At the same time, we believe Nokia’s strength and continued investment in maps and navigation will greatly enhance our existing products, enabling us to focus on areas that are core to our business.

Nokia & Yahoo Teaming Up?

Web search and content provider Yahoo! has announced that it will hold a major press event this coming Monday that will apparently offer news of its push on “rich online and mobile experiences, bringing forward a new era in keeping consumers connected.”

With no further details offered by Yahoo!, one has to turn to the ongoing mobile rumor mill to come up with a potential answer. The latest gossip revolves around “Project Nike,” an apparent partnership between the web services giant and mobile handset manufacturer Nokia; the joint venture would apparently see Nokia provide Yahoo! applications and services on its phones as a staple.

Until the press conference and corresponding announcement on the morning of May 24, 2010, we can only continue to guess but do check back for news when the company does reveal its plans.

Android Surpasses Windows in Mobile Market Share

Market research firm Garter has released its latest report detailing worldwide smartphone market share, measuring by sales, covering Q1 2010.

The numbers reveal a clear winner in Google Android as its share of the smartphone market soared from 1.6 percent in Q1 2009 to a whopping 9.6 percent in in the same quarter this year. The 10.1 percent market share owned by Microsoft for its Windows Mobile operating system in Q1 2009 dropped sharply to 6.8 percent in Q1 2010, clearly marking the company’s difficulty in competing with the latest newcomers to the mobile operating system market as it prepares to launch Windows Phone 7.

Apple’s iPhone OS surprised no one with its numbers, jumping from 10.5 percent to 15.4 percent market share. Nokia and RIM continued to dominate the standings with market shares of 44.3 and 19.4 percent respectively.

Nokia Restructures

Nokia officials have announced that they are restructuring the company in a bid to “increase competitiveness and deliver a stronger and more differentiated consumer experience.” The move will see Nokia split into three main units: Mobile Phones, Mobile Solutions and Markets. The units and their objectives, effective July 1, 2010, break down like this:

Mobile Phones: This unit, lead by Mary McDowell, will continue to innovate Series 40 phones with a focus on product management, planning and research and development.

Mobile Solutions: Lead by Ansi Vanjoki, the Mobile Solutions will focus solely on high-end smartphones running the MeeGo and Symbian mobile operating systems.

Markets: Headed by Niklas Savander, the Markets unit will take full control over sales and general marketing for all Nokia devices.
