Nokia Introduces Oro Luxury Phone

Nokia has announced a new smartphone to join its lineup and the Oro is one device that brings a little something more to the table for those inclined towards luxury.

Based on the popular C7, the Oro’s form is plated in 18 karat gold and then hand-wrapped in leather. The crown jewel of this fancy phone is the sapphire crystal that serves as the home key. Despite its expensive wrapping, the Oro sports no upgrades over the C7′s hardware, including the surprising lack of autofocus with the eight megapixel camera.

The Nokia Oro luxury smartphone will be made available in Europe, China and the Middle East in Q3 2011 at a hefty introductory price of 800 EUR ($1125 USD).

Nokia Unveils New Font, Branding

Nokia’s iconic Sans font, found in its branding and the interfaces of most phones the company has released, is out the door as Nokia works on rebranding and more closely associating itself with the Windows Phone brand.

Dubbed Nokia Pure, the new font features smooth flowing text, “conveying forward movement” according to the associated press release. While there are some differences, the new Pure font bears a striking resemblance to the Segoe font used on Windows 7-powered devices, an obvious move by Nokia to more closely link the brands given their partnership.

Given the dated look of the Nokia Sans font, despite its familiarity with consumers, the Nokia Pure approach looks to modernize the company, an added boost with Nokia’s big plans for 2011. The updated font is expected to grace promotional material later this year.

Nokia Previews Intuitive Video App

Nokia Beta Labs has released info on a cool new video organizing app meant to make taking and sharing mobile videos easier.

Nokia Shoot and Tag is a video recording and editing app with the very useful feature of automatically tagging scenes during filming by recognizing a change in scenery. Where mobile video takers are usually forced to find the piece of video they want and cut it before sharing online, Nokia users will have that done for them, allowing them to upload scenes at will with no additional editing needed. For picky users wanting to be more specific, manual tagging can be done instantly with a single tap on the phone’s screen. Once a film is finished recording, the app displays the film on-screen along with the entire video broken into scenes beside it, allowing for easy picking, saving and uploading.

Nokia Shoot and Tag is currently still being tweaked but expect to see it later this year on a Nokia device near you.

Nokia, Intel Recruit AMD for MeeGo

Chip-maker AMD has announced that it will be joining the effort by mobile manufacturer Nokia and competitor Intel in heading up the MeeGo project, Nokia’s effort at a new mobile operating system.

A combination of Intel’s Moblin and Nokia’s Maemo mobile OSes, MeeGo is expected to be seen on mobile devices for the first time in 2011 with both smartphones and netbooks in mind. Exactly what role AMD will play in the development has yet to be outlined.

Nokia MeeGo Exec Resigns

Nokia vice president Ari Jaaksi, the lead executive in charge of the MeeGo device team, has resigned from his positions with the company.

With the resignation coming last week, Nokia has since publicly assured both users and investors that the unexpected news will not affect the current MeeGo rollout schedule, but lingering doubts remain given that this is only the latest in a string of recent high-level resignations within Nokia. The company’s former CEO, Oll-Pekka Kallasvuo, left the firm last month, followed by fellow executive Anssi Vanjoki and chairman of directors Jorma Ollila.
