Android’s Next Music Player Revealed

A video that surfaced online yesterday by a person claiming to be a Google Android developer showcases the mobile operating system’s next generation music player.

Purportedly an alpha version, the music player shown in the video features an all-new library view, the ability to be viewed in either portrait or landscape mode, and early review suggest that it is generally better at everything it does when compared to the latest official Android release.

Keeping it from official release appears to be the less-than-stellar streaming capabilities. Fortune Magazine has reported that Google has been working on this project for several months now, building mainly on the ability to stream music directly from the Google-maintained cloud.

Google Activates 300,000 Android Phones Daily

Google vice president of engineering Andy Rubin yesterday posted on Twitter a number that shows Google’s push into the mobile market has been remarkably successful: Google is now activating more than 300,000 Android smartphones per day.

The news comes only a few months after a figure of 200,000 activations per day was reported this past August. This most recent tweet comes amid speculation that Android’s popularity was waning as some analysts settled on a current figure just over the 200,000 mark.

By comparison Apple’s Steve Jobs has reported that his company activates about 270,000 iPhone devices daily.

Android Market Getting Content Ratings

With Android 2.1 rolling out to replace 1.6 on many popular smartphones this month, including the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, and Android 2.3 “Gingerbread” just on the horizon, Google has announced upgrades to the linked Android Market application.

According to an announcement made by Google’s Eric Chu last week on the Android developer’s blog, the Android Market app will soon feature content ratings for all apps and games available in the store. Covering all downloadable content, free and paid, the ratings will be as follows:

  • All: Similar to the ESRB’s “Everyone” rating, meaning content is appropriate for all ages
  • Pre-teen: Suitable for children at least 10 years old.
  • Teen: Suitable for for children at least 14 years old
  • Mature: Suitable only for adults at the age of majority (typically 18+)

Starting this week, developers will be required to attach a rating to all submitted apps and games and will have “several weeks” to submit ratings for previously submitted software.

Majority of Android Smartphones on 2.1, 2.2

With data collected before November 1st, and so before yesterday’s rollout of Android 2.1 for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro (Mimmi), Google has released a report showing that 77 percent of Android-powered phones are currently running on version 2.1 (Eclair) or version 2.2 (Froyo).

With only 7.9 percent of Android phones running version 1.5 and another 15 pecent running 1.6, 2.1 Eclair claims 40.8 percent of users while 2.2 Froyo represents the remaining 36.2 percent. The data released by Google also shows that at least 25 percent of Android smartphones have been using at least version 2.1 since May 2010 with version 2.2 getting its big boost late in the summer.

The long-rumored Google Android Gingerbread, potentially version 2.3 of the popular open-source mobile OS, remains shrouded in mystery at the moment.
