Flash 10.2 Confirmed for Android 3.0, BlackBerry PlayBook

Adobe confirmed this week that the latest iteration of its Flash Player software, version 10.2, will be present in both Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb and BlackBerry PlayBook devices on their respective launches.

Adobe made the announcement at the Mobile World Congress event currently ongoing in Barcelona, Spain, indicating that all of the most recent Flash features would be present on the next generation of RIM and Google devices, including Stage Video, a new function meant to enable higher frame rates in order to offer higher-quality video while using less processor and memory resources.

Google to Host Android Honeycomb Event

Details are sparse but it has been confirmed that Google is sending out invitations to mobile technology press agents to an event to be held on February 2, 2011, at the company’s Mountain View headquarters.

Promising an in-depth look at the upcoming Google Android 3.0 “Honeycomb” mobile operating system, the invitations specify an inside look at the workings of the tablet OS along with hands-on demonstrations of the software available to all.

We’ll have more details following the event on Wednesday, so stay tuned!

Google Android 2.4 “Ice Cream”

Sources speaking to gadget blog Pocket-lint have confirmed that Google will launch the latest version of its Android mobile operating system at the Google I/O conference to be held in May, 2011.

Details concerning this latest iteration of the OS are nearly non-existent but Google’s Andy Rubin did previously confirm to TechCrunch that this version’s code name is Ice Cream, following tastefully (pun intended) in the tracks of Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread and Honeycomb.

Android 3.0 Tablet Only?

The latest report offering details on the upcoming Android 3.0 “Honeycomb,” this one from PCMag.com, suggests that the latest incarnation of Google’s mobile operating system will require dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processors in order to fully operate, indicating that a tablet-only release is a possibility.

If true – the information is as of yet unconfirmed by any official source within Google – this news would mean that current Android-based tablets, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, would not be compatible with Honeycomb due to their lack of necessary hardware. When all is said and done, it would appear that Android will be temporarily split between smartphones and tablets until a later release is able to handle both types of device smoothly.

Motorola’s upcoming unnamed tablet, revealed last month by Google, will be the first device to run Android 3.0.
