Skype Offers Free 3G Calls on iPhone

Skype has announced that its new version of the iPhone Skype client will allow users of the popular Apple smartphone to make Skype-to-Skype calls over a 3G connection – for free. With free calling previously only available when connected to WiFi, Skype will allow for free 3G calling throughout 2010 with the end of the offer coinciding with pricing plans to be released for 2011.

In addition to the freebie offer, Skype’s latest iPhone quality also boasts improved voice quality described as “CD-like” in the official press release. Other new features include an improved call audio quality indicator, quicker start times and easier access to the dial pad directly from the home screen.

The latest Skype client for iPhone can be downloaded from Apple’s marketplace from your iPhone now.

Flash 10.1 For Android in June

Only a few days after Apple CEO Steve Jobs made it clear that Flash wouldn’t be coming to the iPhone or iPad any time soon, Adobe’s chief technology officer Kevin Lynch offered a retort that dismissed Apple and focused on the company’s efforts to support other popular platforms like Google Android, Blackberry OS, webOS and the upcoming Windows Phone 7.

The highlight of Adobe’s rebuttal was the announcement that they will be ready to show the Google Android 10.1 Flash Player at this month Google I/O conference with a general public release to follow in June.

Google Releases Voice App For iPhone, webOS

Apple’s reluctance to publish the official Google Voice app in its iPhone App Store hasn’t stopped Google from making its Voice app available to users of all kinds, as announced yesterday by the web giant.

Google revealed that it has already launched a web app compatible with both the Apple iPhone and Palm’s webOS (which powers both the popular Pre and Pixi smartphones), powered by HTML5 and allowing users of those handsets to make cheap calls through the Google Voice service.

The new app is freely available for download at the Google Voice site.

iPhone, Blackberry Curve Top U.S. Smartphone List

The Nielson Company has released a recent poll of American smartphone users showing that the Apple iPhone is king of the hill where U.S. power-users are concerned.

A full four percent of users polled said that they owned an Apple iPhone (including both the iPhone 3G and 3GS), making the iPhone the most-owned smartphone in the United States. The Blackberry Curve 8300 ranked second on the list with 3.7 percent. Here are the top five, with numbers:

  1. Apple iPhone – 4%
  2. Blackberry Cruve 8300 – 3.7%
  3. Motorola RAZR V3 – 2.3%
  4. LG enV2 – 2.1%
  5. LG Voyager – 1.7%

Additional information gathered in the poll included the ranking of the most-accessed mobile site for American users:

  1. Google
  2. Yahoo Mail
  3. Gmail
  4. Weather Channel
  5. Facebook

The study also found that Google was the most accessed Web site from mobile phones between January and September 2009. Yahoo Mail, Gmail, the Weather Channel, and Facebook trailed the popular search engine.

Vodafone UK Adds iPhone 3G & 3GS

Vodafone UK, a leading wireless provider in the United Kingdom, has announced that it will soon be offering the Apple iPhone 3G and 3GS to its users.

The pricing structure of Vodafone’s first foray into iPhone territory will see the iPhone 3G available for free with an approved contract at a minimum of 36 GBP per month with the 3GS model free with an approved contract at a minimum of 45 GBP per month.

Pre-orders are being taken now and the official iPhone release for Vodafone UK is January 14; the handsets will be available online and via Apple and Vodafone retail outlets.
