The Xperia U next to the Xperia S.

More images of the Sony Xperia U, a new smartphone expected to be officially announced at the Mobile World Congress event later this month, are making the rounds online alongside news of yet another Xperia on the way.

Code named “Kumquat”, the Xperia U ST25 looks to be a smaller, slightly tweaked iteration of the Xperia S. The battery is removable in the Xperia U, a change from the original Xperia S design, and the new smartphone is expected to sport a 1GHz dual-core processor, a 3.5 inch display and a five megapixel camera.

Specs for the Xperia P, another phone expected to get a MWC shout out, aren’t currently available; the only information available today is the code name (“Nypon”) and the model name (LT22).

Sony’s 2011 deal to purchase the 50% of its shares owned by mobile communications company Ericsson has been made official as of yesterday, ending the era of Sony Ericsson and giving Sony’s mobile division the ability to more easily integrate its smartphone offerings with its other consumer electronics.

Sony has been fairly tight-lipped about what the future may hold and yesterday’s press release didn’t offer much in the way of exciting introspection but the company is expected to reveal new mobile offerings at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2012 event.

The Sony Xperia S, coming this Spring, will be the first of many non-Ericsson-branded smartphone devices from Sony.

Several news sources are reporting that Sony has given the green light to HTC to make some of their more powerful smartphones PlayStation certified, giving them the ability to download and play content from the mobile PlayStation network.

With the official certification expected in the second half of 2012, HTC will become the most mobile manufacturer outside of Sony itself to offer the coveted PlayStation label on its smartphones and tablets. With the PlayStation Suite mobile framework proving to be popular in both North America (with the Xperia Play, Sony Tablet S and Sony Tablet P) and Japan (the former along the Xperia Arc and Xperia Acro smartphones), many are speculating that HTC will not be the last third party to receive the certification.

Upcoming plans for the PlayStation Suite framework have been outlined by Sony President and CEO Kazuo Hirai, indicating that the framework will allow for cross-platform and cross-device multiplayer, allowing, for example, someone playing a PlayStation certified game on an Xperia Play to play alongside some with the PlayStation Vita.

The PlayStation Vita, Sony’s next generation portable gaming device, has been available in most parts of the world for only a short time but already its operating system, dubbed Vita OS, is proving to be a popular piece of software.

With that fact in mind, Sony development head Yoshio Matsumoto was asked this week if the Vita OS was likely to make an appearance on other types of Sony devices. His response:

If you’re asking if we’ve made it in a way that’s expandable, so that it’s possible to apply to smartphones and tablets on top of achieving the high responsiveness we need for gaming devices — it is possible. That doesn’t mean that we’re applying it to smartphones and tablets at this point in time, but it’s been designed with expandability in mind.

Yoshio Matsumoto, Sony Development Team

Matsumoto’s comments suggest that a Vita OS-powered Xperia smartphone or Sony tablet isn’t exactly imminent, but the future could certainly have interesting things in store for Sony where the operating system is concerned.

Have you already gotten your hands on a PlayStation Vita? What are your impressions?

The latest smartphone rumored to soon be announced by Sony may be the Xperia Sola, a moniker now trademarked with both the European trademarking office (OHIM) and the American trademarking office (USPTO).

"Xperia Sola" USPTO filing

While we’ll all hope for details to be released at the MWC 2012 show later this month, for now we have to make do with this filing; no technical specifications, pictures or other details are currently available.
